Why does my nose get runny when I eat spicy food?

Question 1
Why does my nose get runny when I eat spicy food?...  Yeah, it always happens. Just curious.

Answers
1)   Because you're a lightweight who can't take chilli. - Jack Daniels

2)   The primary reason spicy food causes a runny nose is that it contains a chemical compound known as capsaicin, which is present in varying degrees in hot peppers. Capsaicin is an irritant, and as the mucus membranes in the nose are exposed to it, they become inflamed and increase mucus production. It can also irritate the membranes of the eyes, causing tearing. The tears drain into the sinuses and run out the nose. - imcallingyou

3)   The membrane of the nasal cavity gets in defense mode. - Nobody Special

4)   The irritant in the spice makes your mucus membranes active. - Smiling JW™

5)   Your nose runs because your body produces extra mucus to insulate it against the irritating spices. Your runny nose is more a defensive mechanism than an allergy. - 001 0

6)   spicy food raises your adrenalin, your metabolism slightly, and your blood pressure a little, but's it's very good for you. If you eat turmeric everyday, you'll live forever I hear:) - Bedazzle

7)   Normal. Where there is fire, there is water. Spice is hot, hot is heat, heat is fire. You can see that when sun goes up the ice melts and rivers brim with water and flows down. Similarly when the sun is up the enzymes go down into the stomach and wait for the food. similarly, when there is heat in the body after exercise, water is expelled. Spice is heat and heat expels water. Wherever there is fire, water is expelled. If water remains over the the fire, the fire will be extinguished which means loss of body heat and sluggish liver. Meaning the metabolism would be impaired, digestion will be effected and assimilation will also be effected. In order that spiciness is experienced, dryness is a must and water expulsion help towards that, and when you drink water, the spiciness is reduced becomes the dryness vanish. We think that we dissolved the spiciness in water. - udaya k

Question 2
Heart palpitations for 24 hours following exercise..anything to worry about?...  I went to a spin class at the gym yesterday (been trying to get fit so been building up my exercise the past couple of weeks).

Ever since I came home from the class I've been experiencing extra heart beats, a lot of really fast ones kind of fluttery for a few seconds before returning back to normal.

Ive had anxiety related palpitations before ie really fast heart beat but its different to that, my heart beat is normal then all of a sudden does loads of fluttery beats then goes back to normal.

Is it to do with the exercise class I did last night? Is it anything to worry about?

Im 28 years old and healthy.
Ps Cant go to doc til monday as the surgery will be shut over weekend

Answers
1)   it may be anxiety related but best to get it checked out anyway by your doctor. - PAULINE

2)   Anon, it could be related to the spin class. It's likely nothing to be worried about, as many thing such as stress, caffeine, and exercise can cause heart palpitations. To be safe, I would check with your doctor. You could also have an electrolyte deficiency, I would suggest drinking some electrolyte replacement as well, like Gatorade. - MerryCurie

3)   Yes instead of posting it on Yahoo- go to your doctor. - Fly-Half10

4)   Another word for those fluttery beats is "Defibrillation" That means the heart, though doing something, is not pumping blood properly. This is not likely caused by your exercises, but rather, a condition that is being aggravated by the exercises.

I'd recommend stopping all exercise programs immediately and see a doctor ASAP as your life can be in serious danger.

But this is my opinion, I'm not a doctor. - tercir2006

5)   You should use verapamil, it is the best about it you can get information from here http://canmdh66.notlong.com/AAPnj4X - Elza Crowston

6)   go get it checked before do spinning again...spinning nearly kills me...could have ectopic heart beat not uncommon but needs checking and your anxiety just makes it vicious circle..you should always get quick medical before start stenouse exercice.
if you still breathless or pain from neck to fingers left arm go see dr asap.i do not think it anything to serious but certainly you need a check out - misscacazzy

Question 3
Can you get pinkeye from wiping your nose then wiping your eye immediately after?...  Ok so for the past three days I've been throwing up everything I've been eating, needless to say I've been gifted with the stomach bug for a little while. Early this morning I wiped my runny nose with my hand and immediately after wiped my eye. Now it's 11:30am and my eye is watery with a very slight yellow crust under it that could arguably be "sleep" or something else. Anyone know if wiping your eye with mucus can cause pink eye?? I'm really mad because I'm JUST starting to feel better from this stomach virus that I missed three days of school for, including today, and now I'm gonna have to miss even more next week if I have this crap next. Any help?

Answers
1)   you can definitely get SOMETHING by doing that - especially if you are already sick - Zarg222

2)   yes you can - Jay L

3)   No that will not cause pink eye. - Alyssa_bby :)

4)   I dont think its pink eye... Ide go see what your doctor says though. Get better! :) - Allee Fisher

5)   Keep in mind I'M NOT A DOCTOR AND THIS IS NOT MEDICAL ADVICE.

Now that that's over with, it is possible you have given yourself conjunctivitis. Whether or not it is pink eye is another debate entirely. "Pink eye" as it's most known among kids has to do with a viral infection, and I doubt you passed a virus from your mucus your eye because if you have the antibodies and are fighting the virus away in one place, you're fighting it away everywhere. Conjunctivitis is just swelling/infection/irritation of the conjunctiva, and it'll probably go away given time. I'm sure you just irritated your eye. If you continue to experience symptoms for more than 2 days or so, you should probably seek medical assistance as you don't really want to mess around when it comes to your eyes. - Ryan

Gasping for Air During Sex?...  The last two nights when I try to make love with my husband we have to stop because it feels like he is crushing my chest. I start coughing and gasping and gurgling for air and continue to do so for 5 or 10 minutes. I've been sick for a 10 days. Do you think I should go do the doctor? Red dots on head of penis that itch?...  The head of my penis itches and also the inside of my thighs have been itching. What could this be? I thought maybe it was scabies, but my dermatologist did a skin scrape and looked at it under the microscope and said it was clean as a whistle.
