2)   Developing skin cancer from unprotected sun exposure takes decades. Just form sun bathing three times you won't get it. A general rule is always have sunscreen on and don't spend more than an hour in direct sunlight, move to the shade for a while then you can go back into the sun - Quietscherin

2)   It means you are very dehydrated. You need to go guzzle down some water! Your urine should be an almost clear liquid. - Renee

3)   drink your 8 glasses of water my friend. - Anna

4)   Could mean a lot of things: if you take B vitamins, they show bright yellow when passed in the urine. Could also mean your urine is very concentrated and you're not drinking enough water to dilute it. If you're not having any abnormal symptoms such as burning, fever, backaches, lower abdominal pain, etc., it's probably nothing to worry about. You could always make an appointment with your doctor and have the doctor do a urinalysis if you continue to be concerned about it. - birdgirl123

5)   Do you drink enough water? Usually I drink plenty of water and my urine is more clear, but on days that I don't I notice that my urine is more yellow. - luchadora

Question 4
Heart palpitations in a teenager?...  I am a teenage girl, and I have had heart palpitations since I was about 9 years old. I get them about once a month. They're more annoying than scary; they will wake me up at night and will last for 1-3 hours at a time, for 1-5 days. I have been to the doctor and had an EKG, but it didn't show anything wrong. Is there anything you would suggest doing that would take away the palpitations?

Thank you in advance!

Answers
1)   Palpitations may be felt accompanying emotions such as excitement, stress, anxiety or fright. Normally a person is not aware of the beating of the heart, but with anxiety or put under stress, or being scared, a person may become aware of his or her own heartbeat.

Some common causes of palpitations are:

* Anxiety
* Some Antidepressant Medications
* Strong Emotions
* Fear

What do anxiety related palpitations feel like?

* A Racing Heart
* Skipping Beats
* Jumping Around Heart
* Beating/Pounding
* Fluttering
* The heart feels as if it is stopping
* A Flopping sensation in the chest

Other associated symptoms that may be felt while having palpitations include:

* Tightness in the chest
* Shortness of breath
* Dizziness or lightheadedness
* Blackouts

If there is no medical cause, here are some ways to avoid anxiety related palpitations:

* Change your diet
* Try to avoid caffeine and cigarettes
* Avoid Diet pills
* Learn how to relax - Queryman

4)   'Palpitations' in general are normal. The typical adult experiences about 100,000 heart beats during a day and a teenager will average even more. If the heart were 99% perfect that would imply 1000 aberrant heart beats daily. In fact people may have - in the absence of disease - hundreds to thousands and even 10s of thousands of aberrant heart beats daily. These may be early, late, or dropped. They may occur singly, in couplets, or in runs. What troubles me about your story is that these episodes are not the typical history of benign palpitations. Palpitations do not typically wake people up at night and they typically do not last for 1-3 hours for 1-5 days. Every physician will begin with an electrocardiogram (ECG - EKG abbreviates the German word) but this records only 10 seconds of heart beats. Obviously serious heart rhythm disturbances will easily be missed. If there is sufficient suspicion by your physician that your palpitations may be other than the typical and common variety that I have referenced above then a 24 hour Holter monitor should be done. I cannot be certain if you should have a Holter monitor - that is for your physician to decide - but your story does sound a bit unusual as noted above. Even if the Holter monitor is normal - should these palpitations be a significant concern or truly annoying such as waking you up at night - there may be a way to eliminate them. I do not typically medicate people without good reason but loss of sleep and interference with activity may be sufficient to warrant treatment. Most often beta blockers are used. These are very inexpensive and virtually devoid of side effects and have a high success rate. The two most common beta blockers utilized for this purpose are atenolol which is a once a day drug and metoprolol tartrate which is a twice a day drug. Both are on the so-called $4 lists or $10 for a 3 month supply. If this is troubling you to the point that you are asking for advice here then it may be worth asking your physician if you should have a Holter monitor or if they will consider a trial of beta blockers. What can you do on your own? There are few things which increase palpiations but these include stress, anxiety, rest deprivation, oral decongestants, and excessive caffeine intake. If any of these apply to you consider trying to correct these problems or eliminating these substances. If I may be of further assistance please let me know. I wish you the very best of health and may God bless. - john e russo md facm faafp
