Breast Cancer is over hyped?

Question 1
Breast Cancer is over hyped?...  Is it just me, or do people seem to be over reacting to breast cancer. All i hear is Breast cancer research walks, buy pink shirts, proceeds go to breast cancer blah blah blah. There are many other types of cancer that don't get mentioned at all, and have little money coming in for them. Im not trying to upset anyone with breast cancer, so don't give me responses like "my mom has breast cancer, you dick" because I sympathize, believe me. But instead of breast cancer fund raisers all the time, why not just a fundraiser for research into ALL cancers.

Answers
1)   Breast Cancer is one of the more common cancers. I would prefer more money being put into Melanoma research, but in reality if they find a cure for one it surely wouldn't be long before they found a cure for all so the fact that they push the agenda for one so hard is great! - Trust Lapras

2)   I agree that awareness needs to be raised about cancers, and while I hate 'competitive illness' I can see why there is resentment about an imbalance in awareness raising and fund raising.

But the reason breast cancer has a consistently higher profile than other cancers is simple - sheer hard work.

Breast cancer awareness campaigns and Breast Cancer Awareness Month were started by ordinary women, most of them with breast cancer or who had lost family members to breast cancer, to raise awareness so that people knew the symptoms, examined themselves regularly, attended their routine mammograms etc. Enthusiastic participation and hard work by women made it grow into something nationally, then internationally, recognised (and then big business cashed in).

People who campaign around illnesses are usually concerned with the illness that's affected them or their family. I know a couple who have a child with a very rare and life-threatening condition (not a cancer). Much of their time is now taken up with campaigning around this condition - fundraising and agitating for more funding for research, more education, more awareness etc.

Individuals don't have unlimited time, and choose their campaigns. And that's what the women who started the breast cancer awareness campaign did, and worked their socks off.

There are other cancer awareness months, ribbons, walks, fundraisers etc, but no cancer campaign has had the sheer hard work put into it that breast cancer awareness has. Any group of people can start an awareness campaign for any illness - but if they want it to be as successful as the breast cancer campaigning, they'll have to be prepared to be as dedicated and work as hard.

There are many fundraising events for other types of cancer, and the imbalance is sometimes not as great as your question suggests. For example, Cancer Research UK, the largest cancer charity in Britain, does not hold a national event specifically for breast cancer - they do hold the annual Race for Life which is exclusively for women - but this is to fundraise for cancer in general, not a specific cancer. They do, however, host a national series of runs for men only to raise funds and awareness for bowel cancer. - lo_mcg

3)   Yes you are overreacting If there is a cancer you want more money to go to start a foundation for it or all cancers if you want. Then work as hard as the breast cancer foundations have and you can have as much exposure as they do. - Denisedds

Question 2
I've smoked hookah five times and I plan on stopping right now. Am I too late? Will I get cancer or something?...  I have smoked hookah five times and a cigarette ten times and that's it. I am 19 years old and have asthama/ upper respiratory difficulties. As stupid a decision as smoking was for someone like me, how much have I compromised my health?

Answers
1)   You'll be fine. That's not even nearly enough for you to get cancer. Hookah is significantly less risky than cigarettes because the tobacco isn't directly burned. Both can cause cancer eventually... but it would take years of smoking... sometimes decades... not 5 or 10 times. Relax. You could probably smoke hookah once a week or once every couple weeks and have a 99.9% chance of never getting cancer in your entire life. - orestes_returns

2)   You are fine, don't smoke anymore if you are scared of Death,

We all Die my friend. - Frank

3)   Haven't compromised your health by much, you should be okay. Drop pronto. But then even passive smokers land up with cancer so any answer you get here is basically unreliable. For a specific answer about damage in quantitative terms, get to a medical professional.

And next time you decide to inhale/consume some stuff, for the sake of those who pay your bills and/or depend on you, learn all you can about it before you actually go ahead with it. Knowledge is power, is it not? - shweta
