Does this mean my mom got cancer?

Question 1
Does this mean my mom got cancer?...  Yesterday my mom said she went to the Dr to remove some pre-cancerous moles, and the way she said it was like it was no big deal. You'd think it's either cancer or it's not. This sucks because all my supportive family seems to be dropping like flies, they're either dead or sick and dying. What's pre-cancer?

Answers
1)   Your mother was very wise to get these pre-cancerous moles removed. This means that they are NOT cancer now, but if she hadn't had them removed, they might have turned cancerous evenutally. Your mom does not have cancer, thanks to her intelligent choice of having them looked at and removed. - buonasera

2)   I wish they would stop using these terms. All pre cancerous means is the cells are of a type that could become cancer in time... but the facts are ALL moles could become cancer in time. Pre cancerous means not cancer. Nothing to worry about for sure. - SethSpeaks

3)   Hello there~

Your mom had moles removed that made the dr's concerned and the moles will be sent off for more testing. I would say at this point...she's more than likely ok but it was just to be on the safe side and I'm sure the dr's indicated that they want your mom to come in to the office on a regular basis to keep a careful watch on her. Hope this helps and I do hope everything will be fine! Take care! - Mercedes

4)   good 4 your mom! melanoma cancer (skin cancer) is a bad cancer. it spreads very rapidly throughout your body. it can spread to your brain and any organ you have. That is wonderful that she did that! On the other hand, have her go back again to check and make sure that all the mole was removed. My mom had melanoma and passed away. The doctors did not get it all and it spread to her brain causing a brain tumor.

Keep in check with your moles as well. - Shae

5)   We all become scared anytime the word "cancer" is used in the medical field, so the "pre" takes second stage. Pre-cancerous means there is a possibility of becoming cancerous, or a 50/50 probability. Removing it changes the possibility to 100% of cancer not happening. As an example, in a typical colonoscopy (intestinal inspection through the rectum), doctors commonly find polyps (little baggy sacs attached to the intestinal walls), which have a possibility of becoming (or not) cancerous during one's life time. The doctor removes these and cauterizes (to stop the blood flow from it) the little wound using a laser. Most of these polyps would never become cancerous. However, if they become large enough they may, so why take the risk and not snip them off? Some persons who had never had this exam done may later be sorry, because once colon cancer develops, it is very hard to irradicate. The latest example I can think of is (was) Farret Faucet who died from it last year. Think of your mom's procedure as a "preventive action" and keep your mind at peace. - Nature Lover
