Question 3
Do antioxidants help inflammation, and if so, how much?...  I have several pink acne scars on my chest and shoulders. I've been taking 200mg of Alpha Lipoic Acid, a powerful antioxidant pill. I was wondering if my pink acne scars will fade while on this drug within time? I'm willing to give it two to three years.

Answers
1)   I can't believe how many people are asking this very same question today. There is a great blog post about how to reduce the appearance of acne scars here:

http://naturalskinshop.blogspot.com/2010/05/how-to-reduce-acne-scar-appearance.html

Another product that helps reduce inflamation is Mizu Serum which contains hyaluronic acid and a small amout of salicylic. This boosts the water content in your skin making the skin much healthier. It also plumps up your skin making pores less noticable. And as an added bonus its an anti-inflamatory

Here is the link to the Mizu Serum: http://www.naturalskinshop.com/Moisturizers_Serums_s/8.htm

Hope this helps - Meaghan

2)   Alpha Lipoic Acid is used widely for its ability to cure and prevent various diseases by neutralizing free radicals in our bodies and protecting the cells from damage.

Alpha Lipoic Acid has its ability to prevent and reverse scar formation due to acne. This is due to the skin renewal properties present in alpha lipoic acid that is why it has been used as an ingredient of facial creams to help diminish scar formation.

Best part is that Alpha Lipoic Acid does not have adverse effects, even at high doses at for long intervals.

So go for it. Take Care - neetudoc

Question 4
My liver enzymes are quadruple what they are supposed to be. Anyone had this before?...  The doctor's office called to tell me this but I can't get a follow up appointment until next week. I am FREAKING OUT!!!

Answers
1)   Any reason why you are experiencing abnormal lab result of the liver? Like consuming alcohol, smoking, doing drugs, eating lots of fatty meals, suffering from a disease like hepatitis, fatty changes, etc. - PurpleHeart

2)   Okay, not to freak you out any more lol, your doctor may just keep an eye on your liver enzymes as they can flucuate. A virus can elevate levels as can anti biotics and eventually liver enzymes come back down to normal levels. I'll add the liver enzyme lab results for too high..although liver enzyme levels can go into the thousands.

ALT Too High (Liver enzymes elevated): Rule out hepatocellular (liver cell) diseases such as cancer, fatty liver, cell death due to bacteria/viruses/hepatitis or toxins, cirrhosis, obstructive jaundice, and infectious mononeucleosis.

AST Too High: Rule out liver disease (death of cells and cancer), skeletal muscle diseases, (myositis and muscular dystrophy), trauma, pancreatitis, renal infarct, eclampsia (milk fever), cancer, cerebral damage, seizures, alcohol, heart tissue disease (heart attacks, pericarditis), infections in the bloodstream (septicemia), intramuscular injections, drugs such as corticosteroids, primidone, antibiotics and other drugs processed through the liver. Hemolysis (ruptured red cells from improper handling of the blood) can also raise AST levels.

3)   There are a lot of substances that adversely affected liver chemistry, such as:
• Alcohol,
• Marijuana / cannabis,
• Antifungal medications,
• Acetaminophen (Tylenol),
• Viral infections (e.g. hepatitis),
• Proton pump inhibitors (Nexium...),
• Cholesterol-lowering (statin) drugs,
• Food-related mold / mycotoxins (aflatoxin),
• Hormones (e.g. estrogen, androgen, anabolic steroids),
• Heavy metal / toxic exposure (PVC, arsenic, pesticides),
• Dry cleaning chemicals (tetrachloroethylene / perchloroethylene),
• Genetic disposition (alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, hemochromatosis),
• Foods / beverages heated in plasticware containing Bisphenol A (BPA).
• Herbal / nutritional supplements (Lakota, kava, devil's claw, celandine, comfrey, chaparral).
• Evening primrose oil [EPO] (impairs liver functions in some individuals. Symptoms include mild, but chronic nausea).

Other factors or medications: certain antibiotics, anesthetics, tricyclic antidepressants, antiviral, anti-hypertensive, anti-seizure... drugs, and certain foods or beverages (grapefruit juice) that can slow the liver's ability to metabolize many toxins and drugs. - weiskraut

Question 5
What is this black spot in my vision?...  For the last three weeks, I have been seeing a dark spot in my vision: when I am outside or looking at the computer screen, the spot is usually near the center of my vision, and it moves when I move my eye (it's only on the left eye.) Sometimes it slides toward the side of my vision, or moves around really fast, and makes me feel nauseous.

I am going to see an optician, but the appointment isn't until next week, and I'm worried. From googling, it sounds like it is either a "floater", which they say is permanent and a sign of ageing, or a symptom of retinal detachment, whicyh could lead to blindness. I'm in my early twenties, so could it really be a floater? Am I going blind in my eye?
Has anyone else experienced this, and did it go away eventually? I hope it isn't permanent, because it's so distracting, I find it hard to concentrate when driving or reading.
