how do they know if you smoke in a non-smoking hotel room?

Question 1
how do they know if you smoke in a non-smoking hotel room?...  how can they tell? also, would burning incense count as smoking (that would stink up the room just as much)
how can they tell? also, would burning incense count as smoking (that would stink up the room just as much)

yes I am aware that if I were to smoke in a hotel room I should be doing it in a smoking room, but I do not understand how they can tell from one night if you smoke alone in your private room with the door closed.

Answers
1)   They have dectors and they will know!!! Then they'll call SWAT on you and they will hollar at you to drop your cigertte and get on the ground, don't you dare do that!!! LOL, why don't you just get a smoking room? - Pregnant Alcoholic

2)   they can tell when the smoke alarm starts going off and the fire dept turns up - angypangy

3)   Smoke detector in the room and neighboring guests - Dee

4)   Just get a smoking room. - Val

5)   The maids can smell it. If they say it has smoke smell, they can charge you a hefty cleaning and deodorizing fee. - silvertatt

6)   if you smoke in a non-smoking room its gonna smell like smoke afterwards. and burning incense counts too - Sidn

7)   They don't know sure all the time but there are certainly signs. A clear indication of smoke or the strong smell, cigarette butts, ashes, burn marks could all be signs you were smoking. Burning incense may not be considered breaking the smoking rule but could break their other rules about burning things...and also set off sensitive smoke alarms. Incense smells much different. - disen87

8)   Well, they would smell it, see ashes.... etc.
They probably wont say anything.
Ive been to hotel parties in non smoking rooms and everyone smoked.
Nothing happended. - Brady.♥

9)   people who don't smoke can tell when they walk into a room thats been smoked in. & i don't think hotels like fire in their rooms at all so incence is probably a no no - sarah c

10)   They can probably smell the scennt cuz if its non-smoking, and u smoke... the smell stays in fabric and drifts in the air and is usually hard to hide the smell... - megan :)

11)   Because they have video cameras in the rooms watching every move you make. *Just kidding*.

The really don't know. I know because I am a nonsmoker and I can always smell the stagnant smell of smoke in rooms that are supposed to be nonsmoking. Usually, there are plenty of nonsmoking and smoking rooms so this doesn't happen often.

It's really bad with car rentals. That's my pet peeve. - ChiGirl

12)   Because the smell is permeating, especially to non-smokers. They may not appreciate incense either, not everyone likes the same fragrances or even likes it at all.

It is someone else's property, respect the rules and smoke outside unless you are prepared to foot the cleaning bill for their drapes, deodorizing, etc. to get rid of the stagnant odor. - flika

13)   The first time I traveled on business I got a non smoking room in case my Mom saw the invoice. She didn't know I smoked. I did it in the bathroom with the fan on. That was a long time ago, they may have detectors now. I hope if you want to quit smoking you have good luck with it. I stopped quite a few times, but always went back the minute I got stressed. I haven't gone back since I had my first positive pregnancy test though, it's been 23 years. My poor brother is a hacking mess. That would be me if I hadn't quit. Sorry for the lecture. Have fun on your trip! - Chrissy

14)   they'd probably get complaints from other tenants or the maid will say something. and depending how strong it is. - d(^.^)b

15)   It is extremely easy to detect cigarette smoke. Keep in mind that smokers really don't 'smell' their residual smoke the way non-smokers do, and keenly so.

Incense, depending on the type, doesn't compare to cigarette smoke, nor does it begin to cover it up. I've heard people say that burning a candle (or candles) helps cancel out cigarette smoke, but all the same, candle-burning is unlikely to fool the staff at hotels.

From what I understand, hotels now charge smokers huge fees when smoking is detected (which it all too easily is) in non-smoking rooms. On Tripadvisor, one couple recently claimed that they were charged such huge fees, when they hadn't EVER smoked in their room. They had only smoked *outside* their room in their car. Yet, the cigarette smell from their clothes and such was so very strong that they were presumed by the hotel staff to have actually smoked in their hotel room. That's how very strong cigarette smoke truly is (although cigarette smokers are rarely aware of it...that is, until they actually quit, at which time they tend to be amazed and horrified at how very pungent the smell of cigarette smoke truly is).

The best one can do, if he or she is a smoker, is to request a SMOKING room in the hotel or motel in which they wish to stay. Otherwise, they are liable to face substantial monetary penalties, no matter how much they mistakenly think their cigarette smoke is undetectable. - chickadee34

Question 2
Should I get vaccinated for swine flu?...  I've been hearing things like it's could be dangerous, is it really that bad? And if you know, how many people have died from swine flu in the US?

Answers
1)   don't get it - John

2)   Don't get it, and i say this because it hasn't been around long enough. Also, it hasn't been tested a lot. - Lilypad :)

3)   DON'T get it. It hasn't been tested a lot, and there's this girl that got a huge disability because of it. She walks backwards or something like that, it was on the news and on youtube now. DO NOT get it. - daaaaamn.

4)   Its fine to have. Less than .01% of people who get it have any kind of a reaction. You will have a sore arm for a couple of days, and maybe a bit of a fever.
Not sure about how many in the US, but its about 5000 worldwide - Bedoin

5)   Only you can decide what is best for you, but here are some stats to take into account:

If you don't get vaccinated, you have a 1 in 4 chance of getting the swine flu (it is rampant, and highly contagious). This does not mean you will have serious side effects - most people get it, it's mild, they get better. If you get the swine flu, your risk of death is 1 in 1,000. This is 6 to 8 times greater if you are pregnant or in another high risk group.

If you get the vaccine, your risk of getting GBS (a nerve disease) from the vaccine is anywhere from 1 to 10 in 1,000,000. However, GBS can also be brought on by the flu, so you aren't necessarily protecting yourself from it by not vaccinating. GBS is treatable if caught early on. GBS is a disease that paralyzes you from the feet up, then unparalyzes you back down. In some cases it can kill you.

For us, we have chosen to vaccinate because I would rather risk a 1 in a 1,000,000 chance of GBS than an 8 in 1,000 chance of death (I am pregnant).

Also, my aunt contracted GBS following a surgery to repair her broken hip (an infection at the source of injury is your most likely way of getting GBS). While it was an awful several months watching her suffer with slow paralysis, then the equally slow recovery, I would never not repair a broken hip for risk of GBS, so why would I not vaccinate against a pandemic that is killing young adults & children?

I hope that helps! Good luck, make whatever decision you feel is right for you, no one can tell you what you should do.

Also, anyone who says it hasn't been tested hasn't done their research - every year the seasonal flu shot is adapted to attack the big strains of flu they expect to see each year. The H1N1 shot is the same flu shot as always, just adapted to attack the H1N1 strain. - Katherine

Question 4
Ringworm for 4 months and many doctor visits ...fungus is ruining my life! What should I do?...  I got a beautiful kitten in July who apparently had a mild case of ringworm on her tail which she was being treated for when I got her. In August I discovered the unsightly rings on myself. :( I went to the dermatologist who put me on an oral medication as well as a cream because I was getting married in September. I ended up refilling and finishing both and the war rages on. The spots disappeared only for a week while I was on my honeymoon but I think it was from all of the sun and chlorine. The last derm visit I had was almost laughable because he was really at a loss saying that there was nothing much else he could do for me ... obviously I don't want to go back. Here we are ... November and still discovering new spots. I have sterilized my house one too many times, taken my poor kitten to the vet only to get her cleared many times and my husband only had a mild case months ago. I really don't know what to do. Even bug bites I get end up turning into ringworm. Fungus is truly taking over my body. I really hope someone has an idea of how I can get rid on this thing for GOOD! Please help!!!

Answers
1)   Tea Tree Oil - Purple_Pandas

2)   It makes sense that what you have is ringworm because of your kitten. But consider that perhaps you don't have that at all. I have a skin condition called Granuloma Annulare. It looks a lot like ringworm and is often confused for it. It comes and go, sometimes awful, sometimes barely visible...and it's not curable. So I hope that's not what you have. Google it and look at pictures and see if it's a possibility. - (none)

3)   I had it for years. Finally, a doctor prescribed some prescription strength cream used for yeast infections. The ringworm went away for good! I haven't had a breakout in over 15 years.

However, since moving to the Northwest, I have had a fungal infection on my chest and back which occurs every summer. The oral medication works, but only for about a year.

I wish I knew the answer. I suggest trying different doctors and trying different medications. Hopefully, you'll find the one that works best for you. - Betty

4)   hi you might have to fumigate the whole house, leave your kitten in vets office until its safe to take her back home,i feel for you all those meds ,creams, but i think fumigation would do it. good luck,i hope things work out for you. - delta wings.
