Question 3
Can my employer make it mandantory to get a flu shot?...  I work in healthcare, assisted living. My employer has always offered the flu shot to its' employees but this year is the first year they are making it mandantory.

Typically, I dont take the flu shot. Im 28 and of good health. Ive taken the flu shot twice in my life, both times I ended up with the flu, never have gotten the flu other years than those I take the shot.

Now, people tell me that the flu shot doesnt give you the flu, yada, yada, and that worked to get me to take the shot the 2nd time, but after I got the flu the 2nd time I took the shot, I swore off the shot, and havent had it since (imagine that).

The company has also decided that if the H1N1 vaccine is available, that too will be mandantory.

Now, my problem w/ new vaccines is that they are new. There isnt enough documentation of them working, there not causing issues, them not being recalled, etc.

I dont want to over think this and I dont want to cause a rift at my work, but Im not liking the idea that shots are being made mandantory, especially when it doesnt guard off ALL flu, just certain strains, and especially since Ive already had negative experiences with receiving them.

I can 'opt out' if I provide a dr's note BEFORE october 2nd, the day the shots will be administered but, what would a dr. write as a reason I cant take it or, would 'patient defers flu shot' or similar be sufficient for what they want of a dr's excuse?

Im also TTC... could the flu shot hender my TTC or, if I got pregnant, affect the fetus?

Serious answers only. Thanks.

Answers
1)   no - gert11

2)   the doctor would have to state that your shot should be deferred due to a negative reaction to vaccines in the past, in other words you have a history of intolerance to being vaccinated. BTW, it wasn't the vaccines that caused your past illnesses, it was coincidence, you simply happened to contract the virus shortly before you got the shots and thus fell ill shortly after so you associate those illnesses with the shots. But honestly, there is nothing in the flu vaccines that can cause illness other than an allergy to eggs because the base for the vaccine is grown in eggs. And it takes a week to incubate a flu virus, if you fell ill in two or three days after the vaccine, it could not have been the cause of your illness, you contracted the virus several days before you had the shots. - essentiallysolo

3)   I am not certain if your employer can force you to get a flu shot, but if I were you I would discuss the doctors note with your supervisor. Ask what it needs to entail, what is a sufficient excuse, etc.
Furthermore, if you are trying to conceive or are planning to conceive in the future, I would avoid the H1N1 vaccination like the plague.
In 1976 when the first swine flu vaccination was released, you had cases of Guillain-Barré syndrome. Goodness knows what the side effects could be this time around. - Tinasparkle

4)   Or what. You get fired? It sounds like you probably know a lot more about this then i do but i am pretty sure that no one can make you take any drugs or shots. Would they be responsible if you would have side affects or be allergic and get sick or die?

Do you have a Union? If not i would call a lawyer and ask what they can force you into and what they cant.

Now on another note. I get the flu shot every year now. In the past whenever i got the flu shot i didn't get the flu, when i didn't get the shot i got the flu. I have gotten colds before but not the flu. I am not saying that you don't know the difference but a lot of people are carrying around a cold bug and when they get the flu shot they actually get a cold and think its the flu.

Talk to your doctor about whether he thinks you should get it or not. Don't follow crackpots like my opinion.

Again i am not an expert. Just my 2 cents. - Kingdale3
