why do non smokers live longer than people who smoke?

Question 1
why do non smokers live longer than people who smoke?...

Answers
1)   well Duh. No offense. People who smoke's lung die out faster, and they're not as healthy. - PrinnyDoodLol

2)   Statistics.
Facts.

Life expectancy calculator: http://www.massmutual.com/mmcalculators/LifeTime.html
Give it a try. - Mad Mama

3)   Some smokers outlive non smokers. - ***********

4)   People who smoke get black lungs and if they smoke more and more then soon there heart will be to tired to beat anymore. - Salsa

5)   that is an assumption, and not necessarily true. My grandfather, for instance, smoked two packs a day all his adult life and lived to 104 years of age, he died in a car accident. My Mom's sister, never smoked a day in her life, and died of a heart attack at 54. So, I think your original assumption is incorrect. - essentiallysolo

6)   You are putting a bunch of chemicals into your body that where not meant to be there. These chemicals damage your lungs and other cells in your body. Is the same if all you eat is junk food. At some time you will have to pay the piper. - mr_gees100_peas

7)   Smoking related health issues (that are not seen at the same rates as non smokers)
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). About 25,000 people in the UK die each year from this serious lung disease. More than 8 in 10 of these deaths are directly linked to smoking. People who die of COPD are usually quite unwell for several years before they die.
Heart disease is the biggest killer illness in the UK. About 120,000 people in the UK die each year from heart disease. About 1 in 7 of these deaths are due to smoking.
Other cancers - of the mouth, nose, throat, larynx, gullet (oesophagus), pancreas, bladder, cervix, blood (leukaemia), and kidney are all more common in smokers.
Circulation. The chemicals in tobacco can damage the lining of the blood vessels and affect the level of lipids (fats) in the bloodstream. This increases the risk of atheroma forming (sometimes called 'hardening' of the arteries). Atheroma is the main cause of heart disease. It is also the main cause of strokes, peripheral vascular disease (poor circulation of the legs), and aneurysms (swollen arteries which can burst causing internal bleeding). All of these atheroma-related diseases are more common in smokers.
Sexual problems. Smokers are more likely than non-smokers to become impotent or have difficulty in maintaining an erection in middle life. This is thought to be due to smoking-related damage of the the blood vessels to the penis.
Ageing. Smokers tend to develop more 'lines' on their face at an earlier age than non-smokers. This often makes smokers look older than they really are.
Fertility is reduced in smokers (both male and female).
Menopause. On average, women who smoke have a menopause nearly two years earlier than non-smokers.
Other conditions where smoking often causes worse symptoms include: asthma, colds, flu, chest infections, tuberculosis, chronic rhinitis, diabetic retinopathy, hyperthyroidism, multiple sclerosis, optic neuritis, and Crohn's disease.
Smoking increases the risk of developing various other conditions including: optic neuropathy, cataract, macular degeneration, cryptogenic fibrosing alveolitis, psoriasis, gum disease, tooth loss, osteoporosis and Raynaud's phenomenon.

Sorry to the one who gave anecdotal evidence of a 104 year old smoker, but your evidence will not stand up to scientific experimentation as one freak result is outweighed heavily by the far larger numbers of those who die early due to inhaling smoke, (directly and indirectly). - Carry On..!

8)   the people who smoke take in some toxic fumes and when these reach the lungs some kind of tar gets accumulated there.also the person who smokes possess greater affinity for carbon monoxide and on increase in it's conc. it turns into slow poison proving to b fatal for the smoker - Karandeep Singh

9)   Do you live under a rock? People who smoke get smoking-related diseases that kill them (lung cancer, emphysema, etc.) or they suffer heart problems. Smoking also reduces the amount of oxygen circulating in your body which can cause more health issues as well.

For example, in a 30 year study done Europe:

45% of men who were heavy smokers participating during the 30 year study died vs 18% of non-smoking men.

33% of heavy smoking women died vs 13% of non-smoking women.

The cumulative instances of heart attack was 21% in male smokers vs 10% in non-smoking men.

Strong links were also found between smoking and stroke, and also diabetes. - Kathleen

10)   they have cleaner lungs and breath easier. - Debbie

11)   NO THey don't it only a myth !!!...............!!!! - mrsunshine56987

Question 2
My 7 year old daughter had an asthma attack, Anybody with experience please help?...  it started developing since she was 3 that she started coughing during the night time not every night but often, almost as a cold that kept coming back. I use a vaporizer to calm her cough and help her to sleep. I try not to give her any medicine if its not necessary, well hardly ever... While at school she had an asthma attack for the first time and my husband took her to the emergency room. My question is what steps should I take to make sure she is well, and what type of doctor should she follow up with? Anything else I should be aware of, I appreciate your answers TY.
They didn't do x-rays on her.

1)   Im 12 years old and i have experienced an asthma attack. If it happens during the night just grab her inhaler and keep using it until she stops coughing. I have always had asthma and i have had a few asthma attacks......but with asthma attacks there really is no need for x-rays, from my point of view. I hope this helped. :)) - Salsa

2)   If the ER docs confirmed it was an asthma attack, you should take your take your daughter to a family doctor/general practitioner for a work-up. They will evaluate how well she is able to breathe and probably will prescribe her a rescue inhaler (most likely an albuterol inhaler) if they agree that she has asthma. They should teach you about measuring her "peak expiratory flow" with a special device that measures air flow; this is one way to monitor how well the asthma is being controlled.

If you go to the doctor and they do not show you how to use the inhaler, ask your pharmacist and they will show you. The doctor might also have her use something called a "spacer" or "aerochamber," This is a device that attaches to the inhaler and it makes it easier to use the inhaler, especially for kids. I hope this helps!! - A

3)   about it you can get information from here http://webmd48.notlong.com/AAGbMVE - Jacquetta

4)   Don't need x-rays. Get rid of the vaporizer and get a humidifier, this will get the humidity up which she needs. Next eliminate anything that triggers the asthma, if you smoke or have a fireplace or woodburner this are bad for an asthmatic. Your pediatrician can handle this quite satisfactorily. - gazeygoo

Question 3
What was that one disease.....?...  Okay so a few years a go we had another disease-that's-gonna-take-over-the-world scare (like swine flu) and I would really like to know what it was called. All I remember is that it gave you a really high fever and a red bump or sore somewhere on your body and you had to be hospitalized. I know I'm being really vague and I'm sorry! But I can't remember anymore of it.
And please don't be a smartass and say plague. Coz that's not it.

1)   Don't go to a pool, I heard they close it sometimes due to folks like you. - CaseyB

2)   you have my deepest sympathies, HIV is a cruel diagnosis, especially when it is an accidental process of infection, tho not sure why you would be digging around in the garbage. But be that as it may, you do still have a life to live, and a reason for being here. Everything that happens, does so for a reason. Perhaps you are meant to make a living example of your life and how well you live it in spite of being HIV positive. There are a great many famous people, Shaq for one, that are HIV + and are living proof that you can indeed have a life, and a good one, tho infected. So get off the pity pot and get pro-active about living a long and healthy life. Your potential hasn't been destroyed, you've simply bet set on a different path. It's up to you to find the courage and creativity to make something of your new life path now. - essentiallysolo

3)   The only thing that you can do is to stay healthy and take the drugs. Look at Magic Johnson. He's been living with it for quite a long time and he's doing OK. - Steven M
