How did you stop drinking alcohol?

Question 1
How did you stop drinking alcohol?...  Did health problems stop you? Did someone else stop you?
Or did you do it yourself without any help?
Thanks - and well done!
I stopped drinking when I was trying to get pregnant 10 years ago and can drink one glass
on a special occasion but my friend is struggling to quit and asked me to put this question up.

Answers
1)   get her in a 12 step program such as AA, it's free and they have been there and know - luminous

2)   i usually stop when im passed out :p - matt

3)   did you get pregnant on the count of drinking? - zellparis

4)   I haven't, but the best way would be at first to take up a new hobby or an activity to pass the time. - Live fast, die young

5)   Me too please help me I'm buying a bottle of Jack Daniels tonight I'll get wasted on my own in my 1 room appartement with nothing else beside a mattress a tv and a laptop help somebody please I wanna stop drinking as well. - MOB

I found this link a few days before on answers.yahoo.com, it contains very useful of
information about many health issues. hope that will help you as well. Thanks - Dr Ashely

7)   i stopped for awhile cause i could not afford that AND food plus pay bills..... to make a long story short i eventually just gave up food - FART FACE

8)   I agree with Live Fast. A hoby or something to "distract" your friend will help. Also, avoiding the situations where you would normally drink can help. It's all about very gradual changes that over time build into a large change. - Mike T

9)   bleh...you just have to find something else to do instead of drinking, and keep alcohol only for the occasions. it ain't that hard, find something else to spend your money on.

10)   Each person stops for different reason and by different means. My husband, for example, was an alcoholic for years. All he had to do was simply stop going to the liquor store. In the past 8 years, he's had MAYBE 5 beers total.

Now, I know someone who isn't having any luck in quitting with AA and therapy. But, there are others who have much luck with one, or both. If you can't stop on your own, asking for professional help isn't a sign of weakness--it's a sign of strength that you realize you need that help and are willing to seek it. - lmsabm

11)   I went AA. I've been sober for 27years, and I still go to AA.

You can google Alcoholics Anonymous (see below) or find them in the phone directory for meetings and information. Just show up. Your friend doesn't have to sign anything, doesn't have to commit to anything.. just show up, have a look, kick the tires, and see what he/she thinks about it.

There are also both in-patient and out-patient treatment centers for alcoholism. Most of them eventually send their clients to AA. - tropnhof.

12)   Allen Carr's Easy Way to Control Alcohol - alicias7768

13)   make a oath to yourself that you are going to stop. i was an every day drinker when i was 18, and drank daily for the last few years, and then decided that maybe i should slow down before i become an alcoholic and really had a problem.... ive seen people that are in their 40s and are alcoholics, and i didnt want to be like that, so i quit..... - Tom Beals

Question 2
should we harvest paraplegic people for limbs?...  theyre not using them anyways...

Answers
1)   That's terrible, but even so, it makes no sense. The nerve endings in their limbs are dead and would be useless to anyone else. - Midnight Train

2)   If they have no problem with it, I guess they could sell a leg or something

but it might not fit the other person so well :/

A big hairy leg and foot from a size 13 man, isn't gonna fit a small 13 year old girl too well :P - Dom Dom Bear

3)   Okay buddy, The movie "Repo Men" has you off your rocker. - Andrew B

4)   No, because they still have hope for a cure that is being worked on right now, and some already CAN get function in their legs back depending on what's wrong. They could be using their legs. I'm sure most paraplegics don't necessarily want to be an amputee on top of a paraplegic. I'm sure you wouldn't want your legs being given out to people if you were paraplegic. Think about it. - Sparkle Bean

5)   Do you really have nothing better to do than repost a question from yahooanswerfail.com? - ~Heather~

6)   This is horrible! How can you even suggest this? Would you suggest that most people harvest their own brains for the simple reason that they don't use them ? - Nandan P

Question 3
What should my friend with hypoglycemia eat?...  Okay. My friend is always tired and has been since he was little. My mom and I were talking and we came up with hypoglycemia because that is what my grandma has and she has the same 'symptoms'. I have been told that he should eat about six small meals that are high in protein. What are some foods and snacks that are high in protein? Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Answers
1)   Eating the desired food is vital for your health. You can try supplementing your diet with acai berry, it's not only a widely tested and acknowledged weight loss compound, it's a superfood too. There is a risk free trial on offer at http://dimock.hotstardiet.info I've been using it for two weeks now and it is definitely having an effect!! - Alvaro

3)   • Break down your daily amount of intake into nothing less than 6 meals a day.

• Try to include as much high fiber, low fat, complex carbohydrate and protein in your diet.

• Stress on having, whole grain, fresh fruits and green vegetables

• Cut down on your sugar intake.

• Have sweets but as a part of your total meal and only at special meals that too in small quantity

• Stay away from caffeine content food stuff such as coffee, chocolates , colas and tea.

• Never have alcohol on an empty stomach and try to reduce the intake.

• Watch your weight, if that happens to be a concern.

• Exercise daily if that is possible for you.

Reactive hypoglycemia is nothing other than a chronic condition which calls for special treatment. With a good and a well planned diet program, you can definitely expect a steady progress to a healthy living.

Some healthy snack choices could be as follows:

• Fruits combine with two whole grain crackers.

• One half peanut sandwiches on bread with raw carrots.

• Low fat cheese placed between two whole grain crackers.

• Simple and plain yogurt mixed along with fresh fruits.

• Low fat milk with banana can also be a good choice for snack.

• Half apple with half cheese on a half sliced whole wheat bread can also make a good and healthy snack for you.

You can divide your meals this way:

• Breakfast

• Snack

• Lunch

• Snack

• Dinner

• Snack

So that makes 6 meals for the entire day. Now, this will keep you going if you follow the program religiously. And slowly, you will recover from being a frequent victim to reactive hypoglycemia.
Quick Tip #1

Try to eat more than just the standard 3 meals a day, ideally you would want to be eating something every 3 hours when you are awake. Even a simple snack will suffice.

Quick Tip #2

If you think you are starting to suffer the first signs of hypoglycemia then you want to immediately take your blood sugar levels. If they are 70mg/dl then eat some carbohydrates immediately.

Quick Tip #2

Try to include as much high fiber, low fat, complex carbohydrate and protein in your diet. This will help keep your blood sugar levels constant

There are many books on hypoglycemia diet. If you've read some of them, by now you're aware that many disagree on what type of diet to follow. It's indeed confusing if you read one book and it tells you to eat a high protein/low carbohydrate diet, while another book says to consume low protein/high carbohydrate foods. Where does that leave you, the confused and bewildered hypoglycemic?

First of all, I am sure that each author has enough confirmation and evidence that his or her diet is successful. Most likely, they all are. Probably, this is due to the fact that the big offenders (sugar, white flour, alcohol, caffeine and tobacco) are eliminated and six small meals are consumed instead.

But the key to a successful hypoglycemia diet lies in its "individualization". Each one of us is different. Each one of us is biochemically unique. Therefore, every diet must be tailor-made to meet our individual nutritional requirements.

The list of foods your physician gives you or the list you may read in your favorite book on hypoglycemia, even the suggested food list in the back of this book, are basic guidelines. Variations come with time and patience, trial and error. Don't be afraid to listen to your body. It will send you signals when it cannot tolerate a food.

So basically, stick to the suggestions in the following do's and don'ts, and hopefully, with just a few adjustments during your course of treatment, a new and healthier you will gradually appear.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DO...

DO -- Keep a daily account of everything you eat for one week to ten days. In one column, list every bit of food, drink and medication that you take and at what time. In the second column, list your symptoms and the time at which you experience them. Very often you will see a correlation between what you have consumed and your symptoms. When you do, eliminate those foods or drinks that you notice are contributing to your behavior and note the difference. DO NOT STOP MEDICATION. If you believe that your medication may be contributing to your symptoms, contact your physician. A diet diary is your personal blueprint: a clear overall view of what you are eating, digesting and assimilating. It can be the first indicator that something is wrong and, perhaps, a very inexpensive way of correcting a very simple problem.

DO -- Start eliminating the "biggies" -- those foods, drinks and chemicals that cause the most problems: sugar, white flour, alcohol, caffeine and tobacco.

DO -- Be extremely careful when and how you eliminate the offending substances. Only YOU, with the guidance of a health-care professional, can decide. Some patients choose to go at a steady pace. If you drink - alicias7768

4)   There are many reasons for chronic fatigue and I think your friend should see a doctor and get some blood tests done. - ExeneC

Question 5
My son has ringworm on his face what can I do?...  He got it when wrestling which seems to happen every season but this time it started on his eyebrow. We didn't know what it was until the coach told us. By then it had spread to around his eye. The coach told us to put tenactin on it which seems to have only made it spread more.

Answers
1)   go to the doctor and get an atibiotic cream - Aaron

2)   If it's really ringworm, the best treatment for him, as a wrestler, would be taking oral Lamisil from his doctor. He would need a note from the doctor, clearing him for further wrestling, in most states. - zitdr_02

3)   1. if he has a ringworm on his face you should gently rub bleach on his face daily until it is not visible or buy some Noxzema skin cream (that will stop it but not as quickly as bleach) 2. put Vaseline on his face that will protect his skin while he's wrestling(not too much) - Jerodd W
