My best advice is to just continue to love and support your mom as much as possible while she is still here. 9 times out of 10 a patient will know when it's time, and within a few hours they are gone. Question 2
Is it routine for a doctor to test someone for cancer?...  the other day my mom told me that she went to the doctor because she wasn't feeling well and she wound up having to get a lot of blood work and stuff done for a cancer screening. Of course it has been bothering me. i was wondering if this was a routine thing for a doctor to do or if i should REALLY be worried.

Answers
1)   They normally do blood work to rule things out, so sometimes the scope of what they're testing for is a little intimidating. If they're doing a normal screening, then it was probably unnecessary to mention cancer to your mom. My dentist found a mass in my xray a few years ago and said, "I'm not saying it's a tumor, but..." clearly alluding to cancer. He referred me to an oral surgeon, who referred me to an EENT specialist and it turned out to be a common sinus problem. My point is, don't be alarmed until you have more information. Better said than done, I know. I hope everything turns out to be fine. - adoptedintograce

2)   To day the doctors are "gun shy" they test for anything they can not find a good reason for. I go twice a year for "Lab Test" aka blood draw and see the doctor 2 weeks after the blood draw and we discuss the results, this is the same for my wife. A very good friend of mine lost her daughter due to cancer of the colon because the doctor did not order a test for it. Unfortunately she also lost her husband in the same year. How much blood they draw depends on the test the doctor orders. I am also surprised you did not mention if a urine test was also ordered. - John P

3)   Don't worry it is a routine thing that doctors do just to make sure there isn't anything going on behind the symptoms someone has, particularly at certain age groups people have a higher risk of different types of cancer so they do it as a precaution to detect what ever they are looking for early, it is more a preventative measure. For example I went to my doctor complaining of constant diarrhoea and he sent me for a colon cancer test which was negative. Try not to worry and wait for the results it will probably be nothing serious.

Cheers - Elly

4)   Blood work is the first indication that something is off... A complete blood panel will show if her WBCs (white blood cells are elevated, which does elude to some types of cancer but, doesn't mean it is definite), and her other panel readings will indicate if there is a hormonal issue, thyroid issue, etc. So to be worried at this point is truly premature. It sounds like your mom's doctor is really precautionary when it comes to precancerous screenings... and in my opinion, that is an awesome thing. :0) Try not to freak. :0) Best wishes... - Texas RN
